Spectral centroid and timbre in complex,

چکیده
This paper investigates the dependence of perceived timbral brightness on pitch and spectral centroid for single notes and pairs of simultaneous notes. In both cases, brightness is better correlated with the spectral centroid fc than with the ratio of fc to the pitches of the notes.

Musical Timbre and Emotion: The Identification of Salient Timbral Features in Sustained Musical Instrument Tones Equalized in Attack Time and Spectral Centroid
Timbre and emotion are two of the most important aspects of musical sounds. Both are complex and multidimensional, and strongly interrelated. Previous research has identified many different timbral attributes, and shown that spectral centroid and attack time are the two most important dimensions of timbre. However, a consensus has not emerged about other dimensions. This study will attempt to i...
متن کاملInteractive Processing of Timbre Dimensions: An Exploration with Event-related Potentials
Abstract Timbre characterizes the identity of a sound source. On psychoacoustic grounds, it has been described as a multidimensional perceptual attribute of complex sounds. Using Garner's interference paradigm, we found in a previous behavioral study that three timbral dimensions exhibited interactive processing. These timbral dimensions acoustically corresponded to attack time, spectral centro...
متن کاملSymmetric interactions and interference between pitch and timbre.
Variations in the spectral shape of harmonic tone complexes are perceived as timbre changes and can lead to poorer fundamental frequency (F0) or pitch discrimination. Less is known about the effects of F0 variations on spectral shape discrimination. The aims of the study were to determine whether the interactions between pitch and timbre are symmetric, and to test whether musical training affec...
متن کاملSeparate Neural Processing of Timbre Dimensions in Auditory Sensory Memory
Timbre is a multidimensional perceptual attribute of complex tones that characterizes the identity of a sound source. Our study explores the representation in auditory sensory memory of three timbre dimensions (acoustically related to attack time, spectral centroid, and spectrum fine structure), using the mismatch negativity (MMN) component of the auditory event-related potential. MMN is elicit...
متن کاملThe effect of fundamental frequency on the brightness dimension of timbre.
The dependency of the brightness dimension of timbre on fundamental frequency (FO) was examined experimentally. Subjects compared the timbres of 24 synthetic stimuli, produced by the combination of six values of spectral centroid to obtain different values of expected brightness, and four FO's, ranging over 18 semitones. Subjects were instructed to ignore pitch differences. Dissimilarity scores...
